George Antoniou is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Northern Care Alliance NHS Group (Manchester, UK) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.
He qualified from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2002. He trained in several tertiary vascular centres in Liverpool, Newcastle, Athens, Manchester, Sheffield, London, Larissa and Alexandroupolis, before he was appointed as a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Manchester. He is certified by the European Board of Vascular Surgery in surgery and vascular surgery.
He specializes in open and endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, hybrid treatment of peripheral arterial disease, lower limb bypasses, carotid surgery and minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, such as radiofrequency ablation and foam sclerotherapy.
His academic interest is in evidence synthesis in vascular and endovascular surgery (meta-analysis, meta-regression, network meta-analysis, trial sequential analysis, diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis, and meta-analysis of time-to-event data), and in aortic aneurysm research. His research work has received positive comments in international newspapers, such as the Vascular News, Endovascular Today and Medscape. He has published more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which have attracted more than 4500 citations with a h factor of 37, and has been invited to act as a peer reviewer in more than 45 medical journals.
He has been the principal investigator for several national and international studies including ‘Clinical and cost-effectiveness of negative pressure wound therapy versus usual care for surgical wound healing by secondary intention – SWISH-1 trial’, ‘2nd European Carotid Surgery Trial – ECST-2’, ‘Radiation Evaluation during EVAR international study – REVAR study’, ‘Clinical efficacy and cost effectiveness of FlowOxTM – LLIFT trial’, ‘UK CArdiac and Vascular surgery Interventional Anaemia Response study – The UK CAVIAR Study’, ‘Topical Oxygen and Diabetic Foot Ulcers 2 – TODFU-2 study’, and ‘Bypass vs. Angioplasty in Severe Ischaemia of the Leg-2 – BASIL-2 trial’.
He is the Principal Clinical Research Lead for the Oldham Care Organization of the Northern Care Alliance and Associate Editor of the Hellenic Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
